The Most Dangerous Laser and Light Treatment: It’s Probably Not What You Think!

With so many laser and light treatments available today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Many people I meet hesitate to explore these treatments because they aren’t sure where to start, and I completely understand why. It can be intimidating at first.

The Importance of Research Before Starting Any Treatment

I always encourage everyone to do their research, or as I like to call it, their "homework," on both the clinic and the treatment provider before committing to any plan.

There are numerous wavelengths that distinguish one laser from another, and each company manufactures lasers with varying quality. Even if you find a clinic with state-of-the-art equipment, it’s essential that the laser technician understands how to properly use that equipment. They must be well-versed in skin, energy, tissue interaction, and the condition they’re treating.

It’s a complicated process, and we’ve all heard those dreaded laser horror stories where treatments go wrong. That’s why experience and proper education are key. Unfortunately, since the industry isn’t regulated, the responsibility falls on the client to ensure they are choosing a knowledgeable professional.

The Dangers of Untrained Laser Technicians

And just to clarify—no, you don’t need formal training or education to perform laser treatments on someone. Scary, right?

You might be thinking, “Clinics don’t hire just anyone, do they?” Unfortunately, some do. I’ve seen clinics promote their receptionist or manager to "Laser Tech," and just like that, they’re performing hair removal, skin resurfacing, and even internal vaginal rejuvenation treatments.

From the clinic’s perspective, it’s a win. Hiring someone with no experience reduces labour costs. But the client? Well, that’s where things get tricky. Treatments can be pricey and come with inherent risks.

Common Laser Treatment Risks

Common risks listed on a laser treatment consent form include:

  • Burns

  • Blisters

  • Scarring

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Hypopigmentation

  • Infection

  • Permanent eye damage

You might think these risks are limited to more aggressive treatments, but the reality is they can occur even during something as seemingly innocent as laser hair removal.

The Riskiest Treatment: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Now, you may be wondering: What’s the riskiest treatment of them all? (It’s right there in the title, so I’m sure you guessed it…)

The most dangerous treatment, which also happens to be one of the most popular, is IPL, or "Intense Pulsed Light." It’s also referred to as BBL ("Broad Band Light") or simply Photofacials. All of these terms describe the same treatment.

IPL vs. Laser: What’s the Difference?

Here’s the catch: IPL isn’t technically a laser. It’s light. The key difference is that a laser is a concentrated beam of energy with just one wavelength, while IPL or BBL uses multiple wavelengths of light in a scattered pattern.

While a laser’s concentrated beam sounds more intimidating, it’s actually easier to cause harm with an IPL treatment than with a laser.

Why IPL Can Be Riskier Than a Laser

Why? Well, IPL contains multiple wavelengths that absorb differently into various skin components, like melanin, hemoglobin, and water. This scattered light targets multiple areas at once, making it much riskier.

The technician must dial in the exact settings to achieve a balance between effectiveness and safety. Unfortunately, not all technicians are up to the task.

Common Issues With Photofacials

One of the most common complaints I hear from people who’ve had Photofacials is that they didn’t see results. More often than not, this is because an inexperienced technician was too cautious and under-treated. While this prevents burns and immediate risks, it also means clients aren’t getting what they paid for—and they’re left disappointed.
