Why most skincare routines don't work
Most of us have a bathroom shelf full of half-used bottles. A serum a friend swore by, a cream from a viral video, a toner that stung. When nothing seems to change, it's easy to assume your skin is the problem.
Usually, it isn't. The problem is the approach. Random products, used without a plan, rarely give skin what it actually needs. A routine that works is built on the right ingredients, introduced in the right order, and used consistently over time.
At Quantum Laser Lab in Calgary, I carry one skincare line: Environ. I chose it because it's built on decades of skin science and a clear, step-by-step method. Here's how to build a routine that actually delivers results, with a few tips specific to life in Calgary.
Start with the foundation: vitamin A
If your routine is missing vitamin A, it's missing its most important building block. Vitamin A helps regulate how skin cells grow and behave, supports collagen production, and helps protect cells from DNA damage.
Here's the catch. Everyday light exposure breaks down the vitamin A naturally stored in your skin. Over time, that deficiency shows up as dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, breakouts and dryness. Environ's founder, plastic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes, built the entire brand around one idea: correct the vitamin A deficiency first, and the skin can start working normally again.
That's why every Environ routine centres on a daily vitamin A moisturiser, such as the Skin EssentiA AVST range. Environ calls this approach the Environ Algorithm: vitamin A first, then antioxidants, peptides and daily protection layered in at the right time.
You may also see headlines about new European limits on retinol in cosmetics. Environ reformulated select products with a well-tolerated form of vitamin A while keeping the same strength, so your routine stays just as effective.
Start low, go slow
The biggest mistake people make with vitamin A is doing too much, too soon. Skin that's been low on vitamin A for years needs time to build up the receptors that let it use more.
Environ solves this with its Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM. You begin with a lower-strength moisturiser and gradually move up the steps as your skin adjusts. Here's what that typically looks like:
- Begin with a lower step. Your skincare professional picks a starting vitamin A moisturiser based on your skin today, not where you want it to be.
- Use it daily and let your skin adjust. Your skincare professional will let you know when you're ready to move up.
- Step up gradually. As tolerance builds, you move to higher strengths for stronger results.
- Add a retinol booster when ready. Once your skin is comfortable with medium to high levels of vitamin A, Environ's Retinol Serums can intensify results. Environ suggests starting with 1 to 2 drops mixed into your moisturiser, 2 to 3 evenings a week, then building up. The full guide is in how to use Environ's Retinol Serums.
This is exactly why I don't recommend buying vitamin A products off a shelf without guidance. The right starting point makes all the difference, and it's something I map out in a skincare consultation.
Add antioxidants and peptides
Vitamin A drives healthy skin, but it works best with support. Environ's guide to skin longevity points to free radicals as one of the biggest causes of visible ageing. These unstable molecules damage DNA, collagen and elastin.
Antioxidants help neutralise that damage. Vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene are standouts in Environ formulas. If you want to go deeper, Environ explains the best form of vitamin C for skin.
Peptides come in once your vitamin A foundation is in place. They act like messengers that encourage youthful cell behaviour. Learn more in the power of peptides combined.
Skincare for Calgary's climate
Calgary is tough on skin. A routine that works in Vancouver or Toronto may need adjusting here.
- Dry air. Low humidity year round, plus indoor heating all winter, pulls moisture from the skin. Vitamin A actually helps here, since it supports the skin's own natural moisturising factors. On extra-dry days, layering a richer moisturiser on top can help.
- Chinooks. Fast swings in temperature and humidity can leave skin tight and reactive. Consistency matters more than chasing a new product every time your skin feels off.
- Higher altitude sun. At over 1,000 metres, Calgary gets more intense UV than cities at sea level, and our sunny winters plus snow glare add up. Daily sun protection isn't just a summer habit here.
Environ recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen boosted with antioxidants every day, rain or shine, such as RAD Antioxidant Sun Cream SPF 20. Curious why Environ favours moderate SPF? Read why you should avoid high SPFs.
What if my skin reacts?
Some redness, dryness, itching or warmth when you start vitamin A is common. It's called a retinoid reaction, and it usually means your skin is low on vitamin A and still building the receptors it needs to use it.
The good news: it's temporary, and it's not a reason to quit. Environ's advice on retinoid reactions comes down to three things:
- Use it less often for a few days, then build back up slowly.
- Add extra hydration, such as Environ's Super Moisturiser, to calm and support your skin barrier.
- Check in with your skincare professional if the reaction lingers or gets worse.
If you're a Quantum client and your skin is unhappy, I'd much rather you send me a message than stop your routine altogether.
A simple routine to start with
A routine that works doesn't need ten steps. Here's a basic Environ framework. Your exact products and strengths will depend on your skin.
Morning
- Cleanse with a gentle Environ cleanser.
- Tone to prep the skin.
- Apply your vitamin A moisturiser.
- Finish with an antioxidant-rich sunscreen.
Evening
- Cleanse to remove sunscreen and the day's buildup.
- Tone.
- Apply your vitamin A moisturiser, with a retinol serum mixed in once you're ready.
- Add a targeted serum or peptide product if it's part of your plan.
Keep it consistent. Environ notes that visible changes in texture and tone can take several weeks, and results keep improving the longer you stick with it.
Skincare and laser treatments work better together
A strong home routine is the best prep for in-clinic treatments. Skin that's well supplied with vitamin A and antioxidants is healthier going into a treatment and tends to recover better coming out of it.
At Quantum Laser Lab, I pair Environ with my Fotona laser treatments, including skin resurfacing, skin tightening, scar revision and pigmentation correction. Your Environ routine keeps working between appointments and helps protect your results long term. Take a look at my before and after gallery to see what's possible.
